Mayday: a spy mission, but a two-person comedy

If the pilot and secret mission make you expect a straight-faced military thriller, adjust that expectation before choosing Mayday. Apple presents the Ryan Reynolds–Kenneth Branagh film as an action-packed buddy comedy. Its US listing gives a running time of 1 hour 50 minutes, so a two-hour window leaves only ten minutes for getting settled and any pauses. The official starting point is simple: a US Navy pilot becomes stranded in enemy territory during the Cold War and encounters an unusual former KGB agent.
